Advice for Brides to Be

Congratulations you're engaged! Its time to think about dress shopping! It can be an exciting time, but also can be a little anxious.

Here is a list of 15 of the most helpful advice compiled by a Bridal Seamstress, who asked many other bridal seamstresses for their advice to brides before they have bought their dress! Hope it is helpful!

1.Try on many different styles even if you didn't picture yourself in them. You may be surprised.

2. This is the most self expressive garment you will ever wear. Pick what you love and not what someone else sees you in.

3. Don't buy a dress that is more than two sizes different from the size you need. Anything that doesn't fit by 4 inches or more needs a lot of work to get it to fit.

4. Don't stress about designer sizing. It's all about the way the dress fits and makes you feel, not about an arbitrary number on a tag.

5. Order the dress size according to your largest measurement. It's easier to take a dress in than to let it out.

6. Be aware of how you feel in the dress as you move and sit. If it's heavy and hard to move in while trying it on, it will be hard to dance in at your reception.

7. Do a "sit test." You want to be able to sit in your dress on your wedding day.

8. Take lots of pictures from many different angles to send to your seamstress. This is the easiest way to get a ballpark quote before booking an appointment.

9. Don't try to hide a pregnancy. We need to know ASAP and we will work with you. We will also keep your secret.

10. Lose all the weight you want up to 8-10 weeks before your wedding. It's best to maintain your weight after you have your first dress fitting with a seamstress.

11. Don't trust a stylist who says "it's an easy alteration." They don't sew so they don't know. (I can personally attest to this one)

12. Account for alterations in your overall dress budget.

13.The price of alterations has nothing to do with how much you spent on your dress. It has everything to do with how much time and skill is needed to make the changes.

14. A sample dress may be a bargain until you factor in how much alterations will cost to fix wear and tear. Make sure it's truly worth it.
